Our last District Meeting. Elder Bringhurst had left and Elder Wright, another Visa waiter had replaced him. Elder Wright (second from left) is from Idaho Falls and he is waiting to go to Brazil. It was a melancholy day as we said our goodbyes to these special missionaries we have grown so close to.
Our Hartford branch had a special FHE/going away part for us. These two special cakes were part of the menu. It was a great evening held pool side at Butch and Diane Canty's.
We have really enjoyed Tom and Barbara Pulvino. Tom is a wonderful singer and Sister Peterson was practicing with him and was planning to accompany him while he sang the Lord's Prayer. Unfortunately we left before it could happen. Babara is a good Baptist but we really enjoyed her.
Brother and Sister Ralph were not at the party but they were some of the people that we really grew to enjoy. She loved to visit and would call if we didn't come often. They lived way out in the country and couldn't get out much so they dearly loved our visits. He has trouble walking and is pretty much confined to a wheel chair. We never saw him with his shirt on. They are in their eighties and she is his caregiver. She is getting tired and struggling a bit with her own health. They were two that we really hated to leave behind.
Danny and Lorei Deweese in front of their home in Morgantown. They are some special friends in that branch. They often invited us for Sunday dinner when we were serving there. Lorei and sister Peterson were like sisters in that they laughed alike and talked the same and enjoyed the same things. When they got together it sounded just like Sister Peterson does when she is with her sisters. They really enjoyed being together and Danny and I got along well too. They were some of the last we wanted to see when we left town. Danny is not a member but comes regularly to Sacrament Meeting. We called him a dry Mormon and he just laughed.
Elder Shiner and Elder McCray were our last visitors as we were loading our car and getting ready to leave. They came up with a car problem that brought them to our town one last time. We truly wondered about how it just seemed to happen as we were leaving. We were just getting ready to have dinner so we fed them one more time. We had to get a picture and they hurried and posed in their hats. Elder McCray has only recently been transferred to the area so we haven't got to know him as well. But Elder Shiner has been serving in the nearest branch for most of our mission. We have gotten very close to him and he to us. It was very hard to say goodbye to him.Unknownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04427410450697404513noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7278824808404300871.post-26140396980860789242013-09-18T20:19:00.001-07:002013-09-18T20:19:34.807-07:00

You can't go to Florida without going to the beach. It was a nice day for the beach because it was a cloudy and not too hot and we didn't worry about sunburn. But it sure didn't take long for the sand to be in everything. We had forgotten how intrusive the beach sand is. It was soon in everything and not easy to wash off.
While you are in Florida you have to go to Miami Beach. One of the fun things we did while there was take the duck boat. It is a truck that can travel and land and water. The duck tour took us around the bay and the islands enjoying the sights and the expensive homes of the rich and famous. Monday morning we left early for Kentucky and drove for 15 hours to get there. The next morning we were back in missionary groove.
On September 6th we went AWOL from our mission. Fortunately we had permission to travel to Florida for McCoy's baptism. We left Thursday after Zone meeting and traveled to Chattanooga where we met with Doug and Jenny Peoples, the people we brought into the Church when we were overseas in Georgia.
It was great to be with so much family again. We are grateful Sherri and Geni and the girls could come for moral support. It was a long drive for us to get there but worth it to enjoy time together.
Bexton was very good, always a happy little boy. He took right to all of us but especially to Tayler. By the time we left, I think Glade and Amber were wondering how they could hire her as a nanny.
Our new district missionaries after district meeting last week. From the left: Sister Peterson from Burley, Idaho, Sister Tenney from Tucson, Arizona, Sister Vercillo from Centerville, Utah, Elder Shiner from Fresno, California, Elder Miller from Gooding, Idaho, Elder McCray from Modesto, California, and Elder Bringhurst from someplace in Michigan. Elder Bringhurst is another visa-waiter that is eventually headed to Brazil. Elder Miller is our new District leader and we love him because he is a good Idaho farm boy. Elder McCray is the only African American in the mission but he is great and handles it very well. He is very secure in his race and is a great young elder. Elder Shiner is a very special young man but struggles because he stutters. He does not let it bother him and he is determined to serve faithfully.
This is the sisters car after they hit a deer. They were able to get nearly stopped so not much damage. We were checking it out after district meeting. We have had some close calls with deer too. One evening we saw a doe and a fawn out in a field. They looked like they would run farther out in the field but I slowed way down anyway. Just as we got close, the fawn bolted toward the road and crossed in from of us. I skidded to a stop and missed him but if I hadn't slowed down, we would have had road kill.
This is the soybean field behind our apartment. With all the rain we have received, it is lush and beautiful. It is just starting to set beans. The fuzzy little pods in the lower picture have tiny beans in them that are just starting to form. I have been fascinated with the soybean fields this year. Last year it was so dry that they didn't do much. This year it looks like they will have a bumper crop.
We had a surprise tonight - September 2. Some good friends in the branch invited us to dinner and after dinner we thought we were going with them to the nursing home to hold a Family Home Evening with one of the residents. Our host couple stalled a little after dinner and then said they needed to stop by the Church for a minute. They invited us in to wait inside while they made some copies. When we started down the stairs to the basement, the lights came on and every one yelled surprise. Many of the branch were there and the branch Family Home Evening was a surprise party to honor our 54th wedding anniversary We were completely surprised and enjoyed the evening. Just before posting this blog, I received an e-mail form President Andersen notifying us that we were cleared to travel to Florida for McCoy's baptism. So it really has been a wonderful day of celebration.
Transfers were this Tuesday so at our last district meeting we took pictures because some changes were expected. In the picture front row left to right: Elder Thayne, Elder Shiner, Sister Vercillo, Sister Toone, Elder Burton; back row Elder Miller and Elder and Sister Peterson. At transfers Elder Thayne and Sister Toone were transferred. Elder Burton was waiting for a visa to Brazil and it came and he flew out. So all three of our companionships changed and we got three new missionaries. Elder Miller is our new district leader. I will have a n picture of our new district next week.
A lush field of soybeans near a home that we visit. We have had lots of rain, far more than normal. So everything is still very green and beautiful even though it is the middle of August. These soybeans are nearly waist high and very thick and lush. They are just beginning to flower and set beans.
Jordan Bryant our Hartford Branch missionary at the dinner after his farewell Sunday. He is headed for the MTC this week and will serve in the Washington Everett Mission near Seattle. Jordan is a wonderful young man that is as ready to go as anyone I have ever seen. I am sure he will serve a wonderful mission. He is so well thought of and loved by his family, who are mostly non-members that we had 98 people in attendance at the branch for his farewell. We usually have about half that.
We took our Leitchfield elders to transfers and met us with some departing missionaries we had served with. Elder Webb is from Providence, Utah. He was one of our traveling elders we served with last year and he was one of zone leaders for awhile this year. We really enjoyed Elder Webb and he was a great missionary. He had 6 baptisms in the last two months of his mission. He has a girl at home and they are planning to be married in October!
Sister Vickie Weber with her dog Tiny and her mom, Janell. Sister Weber was born with brittle bone disease and then she had polio and was in an iron lung when she was a young child. She has to be very careful because any sudden movement or bump can break one of her bones. Even in the ambulance, they have to cross bumps like railroad tracks very carefully or bone damage can occur. She spent most of her life in a wheel chair but worked hard and earned a college degree. As she has grown older her health has deteriorated until for more than 2 years she has been bedridden and never leaves her mother's home except for special treatments or exams. The bed is very special with a bladder in it that circulates sand so as to manipulate her skin so she doesn't get bedsores. They still come and she has other problems that would be very hard for a normal person to endure. She is a wonderful lady though and always very positive. We always go away uplifted by our visits. We visit here every other week and have done so for both our missions. We have truly grown to love her and her mom and her sister who helps with her care. Sister Weber is truly a gallant lady.
Sister Vercillo and Sister Toone are part of our district and serve in Russellville. Recently they have been walking a lot. Last month they went 300 miles over their monthly allowed miles and that is a no-no. These are sister Vercillo"s shoes. Notice the big holes in them from walking so much. Today we went to the mall as part of our p-day activities and she bought a new pair of shoes.
We got up early this morning and traveled to Mammoth Caves Again for a p-day outing. There are 4 pairs of missionaries in our district including us. All went and our Zone leaders wanted to go too so all ten of us went on a different tour than we went before. Starting on the left: Elder Oliver from Canada, Elder Freeze from Provo, Utah and they are our zone leaders; then Elder Thayne from Bountiful, Utah, Elder Miller from Gooding Idaho, Elder Burton from North Carolina, Elder Shiner from Fresno California, Sister Vercillo from Centerville, Utah and Sister Toone from Colorado.
This picture was taken in an area of the cave where there are lots of different formations and this particular area is called the drapery room. Your have to go down 50 stairs to get to this small area and Sister Peterson stayed up at the top because you have to go back up those 50 stairs to get out.
Elder Thayne had a very bad experience in a cave when he was a Boy Scout and struggles with claustrophobia. He got out of the drapery room before we could get his picture with the others. He went on ahead and I had to hurry to catch him as he wanted out of there as soon as he could. But he was a good sport and participated and accompanied Sister Peterson as they went on ahead while we were in the drapery room.
The cave tour we went on took 2 hours, covered about a mile and included 500 steps up and down. At one point we were about 350 feet underground. Some of the passages were quite small, especially the entrance where we came down 250 steps through some very narrow areas and low hanging areas. I enjoyed the experience though and my claustrophobia didn't bother me. I think I have been there enough to get used to the whole idea.
We were doing most of the picture taking with the Elders and Sisters cameras so we didn't get in the group picture. Then I carried the camera on the tour so I wasn't in any of the pictures in the cave for evidence that I did go? But I did indeed go and had an enjoyable time. It is always a good day when you can spend time with these special young people. The caves are only a few miles from Bowling Green so after we had lunch, we went to the mall. The Elders bought ties and the Sisters bought shoes! Sister Peterson satisfied some of her need for shopping and fortunately didn't buy anything, even though she went in Bath and Body and Lane Bryants! On the way through Bowling Green we saw this on a church marquee: "You are on God's wanted list, Turn yourself in!
Recently we went on splits with Brother and Sister Pieper. Bro. Pieper and I visited Brother Wayne Crowe pictured above. Only the priesthood go there because Brother Crowe, a single man, has 3 big dogs. He got two out the door but couldn't get this big feller out. The dog was not mean but just very hyper and hard to control. He was big enough that he about knocked you down when he jumped up on you. We had a great visit and then he had to get one of the mean dogs back in the house before we could leave for the car. Just another exciting visit in rural Kentucky!
This is Sister Merlyn Francis, on of our very special shut-in friends that we try to visit every week. She is 90 years old and has fibramyalgia. She also had colon cancer and had most of her colon removed. She can't be out much but loves to have us come visit. We visited her last year in Morgantown and grew to dearly love and appreciate her. After we left last year she had to go to a nursing home. She was recently moved to a small nursing home nearby where we live in Hartford. She has no family left but a sister-in-law and no friends yet in Hartford. So we have been visiting her several times a week and taking members of the branch to meet her so she can form new friendships. It has been a special privilege to be her surrogate family.
Saturday the branch had a service project of yard work for the lady between us, Sister Wilma Embry. She is diabetic and has breathing problems from smoking many years in the past. She tries very hard and does the best she can but needed a little help doing some cleanup on her property. It was a great activity but we found out just how out of shape we are. It was quite hot and not being used to working in the heat, we both got a little over-heated. That night it was hard to sleep due to aching muscles.
Sister Embry wanted some overgrown bushes and small trees removed and Brother Bryant in the red shirt, pulled them out with his four-wheel drive pickup. The young man in the blue shirt is his son, Jordan Bryant, our branch missionary that is due to leave in two weeks to serve in the Washington Everett Mission. He is a very special young man and will make a great missionary.
Brother and Sister Studd are a great young couple in our branch. They lead the YM & YW in our branch. Brother Studd is also the ward clerk. He served his mission in the Idaho Boise Mission. Sister Studd grew up on a dairy in a nearby area but hates cows. The young man in the background is Dalton Chinn, currently the only young man in our branch.
Sisters Amber Chinn and Kelly Bryant, two of those who helped with the project. Sister Chinn is the primary president and Sister Bryant is in the YW. The Bryants lived in Morgantown last year but moved to Hartford after we left. So we have enjoyed their friendship for both of our missions. Kelly filled a mission to Texas and has been very supportive of our mission. Often going out with us to find and meet new people.
The boss ladies, a dirty job but somebody's got to do it. It was a fun project and we got a lot done. I took more pictures of most everybody that participated but felt these were enough to represent what went on. It was kind of fun to get a little dirty and sweaty for a change.
This is the little Samoan sister I have written about before. She really became attached to Sis. Peterson and would always come for several hugs when we came to zone meetings. She was afraid she was going to be transferred so we had to get her picture. She bore testimony at the end of Zone meeting and began by saying she had never spoke before so many white faces ever before in her life. She is a real sweetheart and doing well even though she is very quiet and shy.
One week later we had another Zone Conference with our new Mission President and his wife, President and Sister Andersen. They are younger than the McKee's but have no children with them. They are a really good young couple and I think will do an excellent job leading our Mission. We will not have another zone conference before we head home so we had to bear our testimonies at this meeting. All departing missionaries bear their testimonies at the last Zone conference before they leave. It seemed strange to do so because we just past our hump day three weeks ago. We have a little over two months before our six months are up. We have been busy and the time has flown. We are starting to worry that we won't be able to finish all we would like to.
Last Friday we met in a special senior couples conference. It will be the last time we will meet with Pres. and Sister McKee. They will be going home next week and we will be getting a new Mission President. It was a great meeting and training. There are 13 senior couples in our mission, which is the most there have ever been in the mission. We met at the Mission Home and it is in the background.
One last picture with President and Sister McKee. They are being released one year early because of Sister McKee's health issues. She is much better but still weak and struggles with her heart working properly. Recently she fainted and hit her head and had to have a pacemaker put in so she could keep going. She is a wonderful lady and is truly a miracle in that she has progressed to be this well.
This week we took our district missionaries to Mammoth Caves for a district outing. We had a great time and all of them enjoyed it even though 2 of them are challenged by claustraphobia like I am. We went on a different tour that included the Fat Man's nightmare, where you have to squeeze side-ways through a narrow opening and an area where you have to bend way over to not hit your head. We all made it, including Sister Peterson, even though it was a 2 hour tour and we had to climb 300 stairs!
Our group on one of the stair landings on the climb out. Our tour took us down over 400 feet in some of the large rooms in the cave but the descent was fairly gradual. Then we had to climb back out by way of all of those stairs through a narrow vertical shaft. But you can tell by the smiles that we made it even though Sister Peterson and I had to take our time and many passed us as we stopped for breathers.
Proof that I was actually there. The picture was taken in one of the larger areas where we had stopped to listen to information from our guide. At one point during the tour, The guide shut all the lights off to show us what complete absence of light means. You couldn't even see your hand held right in front of your eyes. Then he had us all remain perfectly quiet so we could understand what perfect silence was. He said that the complete absence of sound would get to us quicker than the blackness if we were left alone in the cave. After that he lit a small bic lighter and it surprisingly lit up a the cave in big way in the perfect absence of other light.
Elder and Sister Oakley from Dallas Texas came to visit for several days. They served in Hartford last year while we were serving in Morgantown. We became great friends and did many things together. They wanted to return to their mission to visit us and see how the those they worked with were progressing. We had a great visit and took them around to visit everyone. I think it brought some closure to their mission and some satisfaction of the good they did. Although Sister Oakley's health isn't the best, they are trying to decide whether to serve another mission.
The beautiful Mimosa trees are in full bloom now so we had to have a picture. This one is in the yard of a family we visit every two weeks. A single sister is the only member and she lives with her children and sometimes her grandchildren and also two aunts and now an uncle. She is a wonderful lady with many challenges, but we love her and want to keep her coming to Church.
This is her uncle Larry, cleaned up and ready for a picture. We love this family and enjoy visiting them. They seem to enjoy giving us a hard time. One of the first times we visited, they told us the canvas behind Larry covered their "moonshine still". We've never dared look underneath to find out! They tease us by saying their hillbillys and always say as we leave, "y'all come back now y'hear."
Our district now has 4 sets of missionaries including us. This picture was taken in our Morgantown chapel this week after district meeting. Starting from the left with the Elders in front: Elder Thayne is from Bouniful, Utah. He has been out 18 months and is our new District Leader. Elder Shiner is from Fresno, California. He has been out 5 months and is a very spiritual young elder. Elder Miller is a real Idaho farm boy from Gooding, Idaho. He does not like Declo because they always beat Gooding in football and he loves football. He has been out 18 or 19 months and has been Elder Burton's trainer. Elder Burton is from various places because his parents are in the service but he was called in North Carolina. He has only been out a couple of months. His call was to Brazil and he is serving here while waiting for his visa. Sister Vercillo in back on the left, is from Centerville, Utah. She has been out 5 months and went through the MTC with Elder Shiner. Sister Toone is from Colorado and she has been out 3 or 4 months. They are all great young people and we love serving with them and learning from them.

Elder and Sister Peterson - Happily serving and growing younger by the day around these wonderful young missionaries.
We are losing our prophet. Elder Olsen on the left (who bears some resemblance to the Prophet Joseph Smith) has been our district leader, is being transferred. Elder Earl on the left has been a Danish visa waiter and he finally received his visa and is headed for Denmark. We have a new district leader with a new companion and we have a new area added to our district. I forgot to get pictures but will include next post.
About 10 miles from where we live in Hartford is the little town of Rosine (about the size of Declo). It is the birthplace of Bill Monroe who was the father of Bluegrass country music. Nearly every Friday in this old barn, a country jamboree takes place with local musicians in his honor.
The Oakleys, senior missionaries we served with last year, came to town for a visit for several days. We have been taking them around visiting everyone in the branch. For an activity Friday night, we decided to have a picnic with some of the branch out to Rosine and take in the affair.
Because it was the anniversary of Bill Monroe's birthday, the Bluegrass jamboree was held in the city park so more could attend than could fit in the old barn. We enjoyed some could old pickin' and singin' Kentucky style in the park.
Sister Oakley and sister Peterson with Betty Lindsey, a wonderful older stalwart of our branch. We have been working with sister Lindsey and helping her with her genealogy. She often comes to our apartment for Family Home Evening.
Brother and Sister Pieper, a very strong couple in the branch, he serves as a counselor in the Branch Presidency and as the ward mission leader. We have breakfast in their home on Saturday morning before our correlation meeting. They have been very good to us and we love them. They were the hosts for the evenings activities. Brother Pieper grew up in Rigby, Idaho.
Recently we visited a part-member couple on the west side of Morgantown Branch. The quickest way to our apartment from their place was to take the ferry across the Green River because it saved us about 15 miles. So we decided to use the ferry even though Sister Peterson was a little nervous because the River is quite high and the ferry wasn't even working for several weeks because of the high water. Here it is coming back across the river to pick us up. Although the river isn't very wide, it is quite deep here.
I am sitting by Pete Smith, the stalwart of our Morgantown branch. It is his 90th birthday party. He is the oldest priesthood holder in the branch and has been one of the mainstays of the Church in this area, serving as branch president and bishop several times. His family had a potluck party for him Sunday after Church. Pete is a wonderful man and really does well for his age, but he is very, very hard of hearing. We have to sit and yell at each other to converse but I really enjoy visiting with him.
Pete with his brother-in-law Joe Forsythe. At 94, Joe is older than Pete but Joe is not a member. Joe's wife Eva was a member and served many years in the Relief Society when the area was a district in the mission. Joe is a good man though and for many years took the young elders where every they needed to go. They are some of the great senior citizens of the area.
On my left are Tim Phelps, Bob Estever and Bob Coots. Bob Coots and is wife are former members of the branch that live in Bowling Green and often come to the area. The other two are my choir singing buddies and I really enjoy them. For some reason I didn't take a picture of our wives, probably distracted by the good deserts we were given.
Monday we have an all mission conference in Franklin, Tennessee, near Nashville where the Temple is located. Monday is our usual p-day so we took some time Saturday to travel to Bowling Green and get medications and groceries. Sister Peterson even went shopping and bought a skirt at TJ Max, so we really let our hair down. This pawn shop is on one of the main roads we use near a hospital where we have visited some of our members. We have always loved the name and wanted a picture and I had my camera along. It seems quite an appropriate name for a pawn shop.
Bowling Green is about 40 miles from where we live in Hartford. We travel the Natcher Parkway (Freeway) to get there. Thick woods line the Parkway almost all the way and only break for a farm here and there. With all the rain this year the trees and all the foliage is very lush and green. It is so thick that you can't see anything except woods as you travel and it makes for a very beautiful drive. (However it certainly pales in comparison to that beautiful drive between Sweetzer and Declo????)

Everywhere you travel in this area is so beautiful and green that we often comment how beautiful it truly is. Actually everywhere we go to visit people is a beautiful drive. This is an oiled road that we drive to a member's home. It took it just to show how lush and green and how dense the woods really are here.
This is a farming area where they mostly raise grass hay. We are on the highest point looking out over a large area. Although there are many hills and hollers, the area overall is quite flat. There are no larger hills or (mountains) to break the skyline. There are no reference points to get your bearings and none of the roads are straight. They just follow the ridges or hollows so it is very hard to keep your bearings.
Some more of the same area. Notice how tall and lush the grass is. The farmers are just starting to cut and bale these type of fields. I wanted a picture of this area before it was cut. All the hay is put up in large round bales and fed locally in the winter. They pasture the cattle on smaller rougher fields and save fields like this for harvesting.
Everywhere we go we see large beautiful homes on very large acreages that are all mowed. They may mow up to four or five acres around their homes. There is enough rainfall that they never water their lawns so the only real maintenance is the mowing. Big zero turn lawnmowers are the rage here and if I was in business here, I would want the lawn mower dealership.
Sister Peterson preparing her talk for Sacrament meeting Sunday. She worked so hard on it way into the night Saturday then when we got to Church, found out there was a conflict and she didn't have to speak. But she will get her chance in a couple of weeks. Our Hartford branch is so small that they only have a two-hour block of meetings. Each meeting is shortened and only one speaker is needed for Sacrament meeting. Meditation and park area that are across the street from our duplex and part of the complex. Right in the middle is a garden area for the people in the apartments. I could garden here if I wanted to! However I feel we are busy enough trying to grow people spiritually. Besides we can buy all the fresh produce we want from the Amish farmers. Sister Peterson has already bought strawberries and made freezer jam. It was a hit at District meeting and the Elders really snarfed it up.
Elder and Sister Peterson - enjoying a beautiful green part of God's creations! (Remember we are actually not too far from where the Garden of Eden was)
We have been receiving a lot of rain the last several weeks, sometimes as much 2 or 3 inches in a storm. This is the Green River from the bridge near Morgantown. It is up about 10 ft above normal but still just below flood stage. As you can see from the picture it is way up on the trees along the banks.

This is a picture off the other side of the same bridge of land bordering the river. You can see the flood waters that have backed up on some of the land. It is also a good view of what the Kentucky landscape looks like.
Another view of some flooded low lying farm land. Most of the land that is farmed is the rich bottom land in the valley areas. All of this flat will be planted to corn when it finally dries out. Unfortunately it has been so wet that very little corn has been planted to date. Farmers around here believe that their yields go down every day that corn is planted after May 1st. So they normally try to have all their corn planted by that date. This year the spring has been cold and wet, so there will be plenty of moisture and the drought is over, but the season is late for getting good yields.
Our current district missionaries: Sister Toone from Colorado next to Sister Peterson, next Sister Harmer from Idaho Falls, Elder Earl from Sandy, Utah, and Elder Olson from Gilbert, Arizona next to me. Sister Harmer was in band with Kaiti Ackerman at BYU-I. Elder Earl is a visa-waiter called to serve in Copenhagen, Denmark. As soon as he gets his visa cleared he will be headed to Denmark. Elder Olson bears a great resemblance of the Prophet Joseph Smith. When President McKee sent me to find him at transfers, he said to look for the Prophet Joseph. The resemblance is strong enough that I easily found him in a crowd of missionaries. Elder Olson is our District Elder and does a great job. All are very good missionaries.
Sister Peterson is standing by a beautiful azalea bush. The blossoms are very large and an unusual off-pink almost orange color. Azaleas are very common here and come in many beautiful colors. All the rain this year has made the flowers appear outstanding.
Sister Bratcher, one of our dear Hartford sisters that we visit quite often. She's had some severe health challenges and can't come out much. She has had heart problems, a stroke and suffers from quite severe diabetes. She lost her leg from diabetes complications. Despite her health challenges, she has a great attitude and a sweet testimony. We love to visit her and always come away feeling blessed.
Just a picture that shows the beautiful woods that are everywhere here unless there is a yard or farmland. There are many hills and hollers but the hills aren't very high. If you get up 300 ft, you can see forever. This week we saw a Baptist billboard with the following saying: "Forbidden fruit creates many jams".
Saturday we took sister Dorothy Moore to the Louisville Kentucky Temple shown above. It is nearly a carbon copy of the Nashville Tennessee Temple that is in our mission. President McKee had to get First Presidency approval for us to to to this Temple because it is out of our mission. The Nashville Temple is closed right now for cleaning so Sister Moore and the other young couple that went for sealings, chose to go to Louisville. Ironically they are both about equal distance from Morgantown.
We worked with Sister Moore all last year and thought she was about ready to go when we left. Unfortunately she didn't really progress much while we were gone. As soon as we got here, she got excited to go again and we have helped her do everything to prepare. She told us today after we started home that she probably wouldn't have gone without our return.
Sister Peterson served as her escort and while they were doing the preliminaries, I was able to help with some sealings as they were quite short of patrons. It was a very rainy day and the day of the biggest event in Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby.
The Temple had some beautiful gardens on each end. We were especially taken by this tree with its beautiful white blossoms. This has been a special week with the special blessing of helping this sweet sister go through the Temple. She comes from a family of 15 children. Her parents and most of the children joined the Church some time ago but none have remained active until we got Dorothy going. She is the first to go through the Temple and she is anxious to do the work for her family members that have passed on.
We have also had some other interesting adventures this week. We visited a fellow that has a wolf for a pet. We were a little nervous about visiting there the first time because of the wolf. It was a beautiful animal and very intelligent. The member had him very well trained and the wolf came and offered his paw to shake. He had beautiful eyes and you were almost a little nervous to look right into them. Sister Peterson also had a goat try to jump into her lap. While I was saying the prayer at the same place, their big German Shepherd jumped up in the chair I had stood up from and began licking my hands and rubbing on my back. Bandit, the dog's name, is quite playful and hard to keep off us.
This is the old Baptist Church our Hartford Branch meets in. Notice the stain glass windows and cross on the door. It is a fairly decent building with a nice chapel and full basement with meeting rooms and bishop's office. It is air conditioned and has ceiling fans so it has been quite comfortable, at least so far. Most Baptists believe in baptism by immersion so there is a font on the main floor right behind the stand and it has been used for Mormon baptisms. It is located near the center of town and near several other Protestant Churches.
This is a picture of a dogwood tree in full bloom. Right now the dogwoods are in full bloom everywhere and they are especially pretty when scattered among the green trees in the woods. The redbud trees were in bloom earlier and have a beautiful rose-colored blossom but we waited to long to take a good picture.
We love this sign at the entrance to the town of Hartford. The sun was bright and in my eyes so it looks like I might be one of the few soreheads. Hartford is not very big but it is separated from another town, Beaver Dam, that is about the same size so together they make up city of about 6-7000 people. Our branch takes in the whole county which has about 20,000 people including several smaller town scattered throughout the county. Our members are scattered throughout the county so we are racking up quite a few miles on our car but enjoying traveling through the beautiful green countryside. We have been getting lots of rain so everything is very beautiful and green.
This old Church is interesting in that it has a goat on top instead of cross. We always get a kick out of the goat church when we drive past so I took a picture. The church is no longer in use and there is fairly new building for the same congregation across the road. But as is typical, few old building are torn down here and are just allowed to grow old and deteriorate.

Friday we went to Nashville for a Senior Couples outing. Most of the Senior couples, Pres. & Sister McKee, some of their children, and the AP's all went on a river cruise on the paddle wheel ship the General Jackson. The cruise took about three hours leaving from the Opry Land area, cruising down the Cumberland River to the center of Nashville and back.

The Cumberland River is quite large and this river cruise is one of the Nashville attractions that goes nearly every day. We had a very nice meal during the journey and also enjoyed two musical shows featuring country western music.
It was a real paddle wheel boat that gave you a feel for the river travel of pioneer days. The boat didn't move fast and it was a leisurely three hours of enjoyment.
Riverfront area of downtown Nashville, during the summer barges with performers tie up at this dock and put on shows for tourists. During our tour the weather had turned quite cold and temperatures stayed below 50 degrees. Just a few days before temperatures were in the high 80's. We all had to dress warmly for the outing and mostly stayed inside for the shows.
The three AP's (assistants to the President) that accompanied us on the trip. Left to right, Elder Monson and Elder Horner from Utah, and Elder Andrew from California. Elder Andrew served in our zone last year and was a great Spanish speaking Elder. We had a real nice group picture taken but I didn't have a way to scan it into my computer. I did not think to have someone take a group picture with my camera. All in all it was a great event and we got to renew acquaintances with some of the senior couples we served with last year.
Our new home away from home. We are in the right half of this duplex. It is fairly new, clean and quite nice. We even have a garage for the car. There is only one drawback, the road just to the right is the main street to a nearby hospital and ambulances go by at all times of the day or night with sirens blaring.
We entered the MTC on March 25th and stayed for five days until March 29th. It was a great experience and we enjoyed it much more this time, knowing ahead of time what was expected in role-playing and teaching. All of the classes were held in a ward building north of the MTC because of so many young missionaries. 730 new missionaries came in on Wednesday and nearly half were sisters. We had a hard time getting in the cafeteria because of all the new young missionaries on Wednesday.
Brother and Sister Johnson from Sandy, Utah were going to the Tennessee Nashville mission serving as Employment missionaries. We got to know them and enjoyed them. Sister Peterson and Sister Johnson really hit it off and became almost instant buddies. I am posting this late because we have been very busy after getting to our mission and also did not have a way to transfer pictures to my computer until a few days ago. I will try to do better in the future.Unknownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04427410450697404513noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7278824808404300871.post-27716803885392224952013-02-12T12:21:00.001-08:002013-02-12T12:21:37.084-08:00

Glade and McCoy recently came for a winter visit. Glade had some business to do with Jonathan Price and the went on a snowmobile trip to Island Park with Jono and some other buddies. McCoy came to experience some Idaho winter, be with his grandparents and spend some time with his cousins. One of the days he stayed with us, He helped me prune the apple trees in the back yard. He was so agile that he climbed right to the top beside me. Grandma caught him starting up the tree in this picture.
One of the things he wanted to try was snowmobiling. Here he's posing on my snowmobile in the back yard. We did go up to Mt. Harrison and go for a short ride but he wasn't real excited about it. I think the noise and steep hills were a little more than he expected, but he was good about at least giving it a try. Until they came we had plenty of snow to ride on in the back yard and I think he might have had more fun doing that. Unfortunately it had turned warmer and the snow in the fields had all melted.
One of the first requests when he arrived was, "I want to shoot the BB gun. We did that several times and then he asked if he could shoot the real gun. So we got out my .22 and he shot that several times. Later he did more shooting with his dad and seemed to enjoy that.
Sunday evening we all got together for some family time before Glad and McCoy left to go back home. Part of the evening was spent writing Valentine messages to the three missionaries serving from our Family. Sunday afternoon we stopped at this overlook where a famous battle was fought and which had a wonderful view of the windward side of the Island. The boy in the blue shirt came up to me and asked where we went to Church. I asked him how he knew I was a member. He said he could see my Celestial smile through my white shirt.. His name was Jimmy and both boys were from Tahiti. One was waiting for a call and one was ready to put his papers in. Jimmy said he worked at the PCC and participated in the show and we told him we watch and cheer for him. He was part of the noon river show and when we started cheering for him, he about fell off the boat.
Landing the sea kayaks on the beach behind our house after paddling out towards the reef. The ocean was about 50 feet from our deck. I am taking the picture near the deck. The weather was great with temperatures between 70 and 79. We had some rain one night but only light showers during the day.
We stopped at this little shop to buy fresh pineapple and he prepared it for us. He also cut the top off a green coconut and let us drink the milk with a straw. We had a great visit and found out they were members. Later when showing this picture to Tiff and Tonga, Tonga laughed and said this was his uncle and cousin Eddie.
We did go to the Hawaiian Temple at Laie. Grandma forgot her recommend so the Temple President had to call our Bishop at home. Fortunately he made connections and she was able to enter with us. We did sealings for family names that Lori brought with her. The Temple was very beautiful with very beautiful grounds. The Temple was one of the highlights of the trip.
Sunday after church, we went to the Pearl Harbor Monument. It was a fitting way to spend our Sunday afternoon contemplating all that happened there. When we got in the launch to go out to the Arizona monument, a couple from Springdale 1st Ward came and sat down by us. We were so surprised that it took a moment for us to realize who they were. It just goes to show you better be on your best behavior where ever you are! It was a great trip. Thanks to Lori and Glen for inviting us to fill in for Cassidee and Shalae. We have always wanted to go to Hawaii but never felt we could afford it. With their help it became a reality.
Last week we went to BYU-I in Rexburg to help our granddaughter Alexis get settled in for School. Sherri and Lexi flew in from Texas and we brought to Rexburg the car her Wardinsky grandparents had given her. Lexi is deaf and only communicates by sign language and she also has Multiple Sclerosis. Sherri came to stay for a week to help her get settled and adjusted to her classes and her roommates and the Rexburg Cold. We really enjoyed spending a couple of days with them during the process.
Lexi has a nice room about a block from the campus. Her view out the window behind us includes the beautiful Rexburg Temple. The window faces the South and is great for sunshine. It felt good to stand by it for the warmth because it was very cold outside, in single digits I believe.
Lexi is a very sweet girl with a precious spirit. We loved being able to spend some time with her and her mom because we rarely get to visit their home in Texas. It was very hard to leave them knowing the challenges Lexi might face in that college environment so far from her home. But she wanted to come and mingle with students where the Church is strong. She would love to find a nice RM to marry and have a family. Our hearts are with her as she bravely takes this step into the unknown.
We returned home from Rexburg to temperatures that were lower in Burley than in Rexburg. Our magic valley area has been under an inversion for over two weeks. It has been very cold with 6 - 8 inches of snow on the ground. Daytime temperatures rarely get into the teens. Night time temperatures are often single digits and sometimes below zero. I don't believe I can remember a time while we have lived here, that the snow and cold have stayed so long.
New Year's day was pretty much when it all began. We had heavy fog during the night and the temperatures got down to 10 degrees below zero. Once the sun burned the fog away, the sky was such a beautiful blue and hoar frost had formed on everything. I went outside to take a few pictures and the snow crunched loudly under my feet. I had a hard time keeping my fingers warm and my breath formed puffs steam in the air. It was the coldest day I have experienced in Idaho for many years. Anyway, eat your hearts out you poor souls that live in Warmer Climes.
I have not posted on our blog since we were traveling home from our mission 2 weeks ago in Joplin, Mo. We arrived home safely and I went right to work and we have been very busy. We reported our mission on the 23rd and were thrilled with all the family that came. Unfortunately we were so busy visiting with everyone that we didn't take any pictures. So I haven't been motivated to post anything here. Last Saturday we traveled to Utah for Brandon's mission farewell. We stayed at Tiff and Tonga's and were there when Tohi went to get his haircut so he could get his mission picture for his mission papers. This is the before picture just before he went to get his haircut.
Sister Peterson with her three grandson that are about to serve missions. Brandon will leave October 30th. Tohi is getting his papers ready. Derek is planning to go in the spring after spring semester. Our fourth grandson, Joshua, is already serving in the Arkansas Little Rock Mission. As most know, we have mostly granddaughters, whom we dearly love. Fortunately four of our 8 grandsons were all born about the same time and they have always been good friends. Now they are great support and strength for each other as they prepare to serve missions.
One of the big surprises when we got home was Lori and Glen's new car. Pretty sporty for someone who's fifty? It has been fun to be home and enjoy family and all that is going on. We missed that while we were on our mission but we still really enjoyed it. We have missed the mission and its blessings. We have talked of going again when we can. For now we are just going to enjoy our home and our family and see what the future brings. I probably will not post here very often without any exciting going on and beginning the heavy workload of harvest in my job at the Sugar Factory. But that remains to be seen?
We didn't post last week with all the activities of cleaning and getting ready to leave. We are now in Joplin, MO at a motel on Sunday evening. We stopped early and so I decided to catch up on the blogging. This picture is of our neighbors Bonnie and Tony Cardwell just as we were leaving. They were great neighbors and very helpful. Bonnie loved to come over and talk with Sister Peterson. She told us she would like to have put a log chain around the house so we couldn't leave.
Jack and Barbara were our evening visit on Sunday that kept me from blogging. We really enjoyed them as they were westerners from Colorado and farmers that we could relate to. Jack played the harmonica and would play it for prelude for Sacrament meeting once a month.
The last person we said goodbye to was our special friend, Dorothy Moore. We visited her nearly every week we were here. She is progressing well and taking the Temple Seminar class. She wants to go to the Temple as soon as she can. We promised her we would come and go through with her? Extra motivation we hope helps keep moving toward her goal. A couple of hours later we got in the car and left Morgantown. It was truly a bittersweet moment. We whimpered and the tears flowed most of the way to Bowling Green. We had grown to love our service and it was pretty hard to leave.
On our last day in the mission, we attended a senior couples conference. Pres. McKee has made a friend of a Methodist minister who is in charge of the Upper Room, a special meeting place for devout Methodists. The prominent feature of that room is this life-size wood carving of the last supper. We met there and had a message delivered by the minister and then President McKee spoke. It was a great meeting with some good relations developed between our faiths. Afterwards we met at the mission home for some training and then we had our exit interview and were free to head home.
We went directly to meet our friends, Doug and Jenny Peoples. They live in Chattanooga and came to Nashville to meet with us. Doug was our good friend in the Republic of Georgia. We took him to Church with us and he came home and joined the Church. Jenny joined later and she is trying to prepare to go to the Temple. She had some questions for us about the Church and the Temple. We met with them and had a great visit. Doug has suffered from cancer and some depression because of some of the treatments. I think the visit was good for both. I gave a Doug a Priesthood Blessing before we left.
We traveled on to Little Rock and then on to Conway, Arkansas Saturday evening. Then this morning we met Elder Ackerman at Church and had a nice visit with him and his companion. He is a great Elder and we heard several good reports from the members about his missionary labors. He serves in a great area and a great ward. It was like being home to attend the meetings where he serves. The chapel was full and participation was great, it was so different from where we have been serving. We had special permission to visit our grandson because it is not usually allowed. But since we are still serving till we get home and released, we had a bit of leverage. We are looking forward now to traveling home and reporting our mission next Sunday.
Glen and Lori joined us for three days over the Labor Day Weekend and we had a great time with them. We visited the Carnton Plantation, which is located in Franklin just outside of Nashville. One of the major battles of the Civil War was fought here involving about 19,000 soldiers from both sides. About 4000 died and another 5000 were wounded.
This stately home was built by some wealthy farmers prior to the war. It became a field hospital for the confederate soldiers who were wounded in the battle. By the end of the battle, every available space was filled with wounded soldiers. Some of the upstairs rooms were used as operating rooms and the blood stains are still evident in the floor. It was a very interesting site but also quite sobering as we listened to the tour guide and realized what happened here.
In our travels with Glen and Lori, we came across this little post office in Quality, Kentucky flying both the Confederate flag and the American flag. This post office was retired in the late 90's and was bought by a fellow who lives there on weekends and is restoring it. Quality is in the very corner of Butler County, about as far from Morgantown as you can get and still be in the county. We actually have a member that lives nearby that we visit regularly. All in all it was a fun weekend and a little break from missionary work.
